Characterisation of dry spells for agricultural applications in Malawi

Abstract Dry spells are one of the climate change hazards that continue to exert pressure on agriculture sector, hence affecting food security. Understanding dry spell characteristics an area helps in coming up with interventions and adaptive measures among other advantages. This study aimed at understanding for Malawi by using group infrared precipitation stations data from 1981 2019. The focused spatial distribution, maximum number days, trend days time occurrence spells. Data was analysed Mann–Kendal analysis R software. results indicate a high occurrences southern region than two regions Malawi. In addition, experienced highest days. However, there is upward central all regions. Local scale topographic influences were also apparent. further established rainfall season starts increase towards end March. this regard, although considered be November April, recommends growing should March so crops not affected which common. Farmers ensure they plant will mature period.
